Arthropod biodiversity associated to European sheep production systems

چکیده
The rural territories linked to European sheep systems still cover wide areas and provide multiple ecosystems services although the current situation of associated biodiversity is not fully understood. In this study foliage arthropods (including pollinators), vegetation height, number flowers plant species richness were evaluated in 9 grazed lands from 5 EU countries with different livestock management strategies dominant vegetation. total abundance arthropods, Diptera Heteroptera, sward height higher more extensive than intensively managed farms. most orders highest mountain (MP) lowest improved pastures (IMP) whereas arthropod showed no differences pollinators was lower IMP MP (p < 0.01) semi-natural (SN, p 0.01). grass rest forb SN peaked significant differences. Sward correlated positively cover, richness, whole community, several like Araneae, or Homoptera, as well pollinator community. community composition fauna particular 0.05) differed between diverse groups under management. Both communities (total pollinators) also types less assemblages low abundant taxa grassland-forest (WP) both cases. A better understanding flora-fauna dynamics pasturelands essential for proper conservation other ecosystem services, maintenance sustainable relying on natural resources.

Exotic plants contribute positively to biodiversity functions but reduce native seed production and arthropod richness.
Although exotic plants comprise a substantial portion of floristic biodiversity, their contributions to community and ecosystem processes are not well understood. We manipulated plant species richness in old-field communities to compare the impacts of native vs. exotic species on plant biomass, seed production, and arthropod community structure. Plants within diverse communities, regardless of ...

Stephen T. Morris Institute Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, Massey University, Private Bag 11222, Palmerston North 4410, New Zealand ABSTRACT: The New Zealand climate favours pasture growth, and it is the key to sheep and beef cattle production as pasture provides over 95% of the diet of sheep and beef cattle. Production systems range from intensive sheep and beef cattle farms on th...
متن کاملBiodiversity of Alkaloids in Amphibian Skin: A Dietary Arthropod Source
Over four hundred alkaloids in amphibian skin have been detected and structures from twenty different classes have been elucidated. These include batrachotoxins, histrionicotoxins, pumiliotoxins, epibatidine, pyrrolidines, piperidines, decahydroquinolines, pyrrolizidines, indolizidines, quinolizidines and tricyclic gephyrotoxins, pyrrolizidine oximes, pseudophrynamines, coccinellines and cyclop...
متن کاملGlobal production systems and European integration
In this paper I explore some of the inter-relations between the globalisation of production systems, the political-economic re-definition of Europe and the changing character of places within it, and the changing character of corporate (dis)investment strategies. International investment form constitutive moments in the creation of global production systems and of changing geographies of produc...
متن کاملMixed Grazing Systems Benefit both Upland Biodiversity and Livestock Production
BACKGROUND With world food demand expected to double by 2050, identifying farming systems that benefit both agricultural production and biodiversity is a fundamentally important challenge for the 21(st) century, but this has to be achieved in a sustainable way. Livestock grazing management directly influences both economic outputs and biodiversity on upland farms while contributing to potential...
